Thomas Paine and Common Sense

No matter where you stand politically or ideologically, this man gives us something to think about.  How is our comfort and consumerism impacting our country?  This video makes a strong case that we, the United States of America, are in a place in which we have never before been.  We are debt up to our eyeballs with no relief in sight.

Seinfeld Teaches History, Sort of . . .

As a teacher this clip featuring Jerry Seinfeld resonates with me and is so true!  Check it out and let me know if you can identify with this as teacher or student.  Sidebar: I only have 12 days until I have to report back for duty, say it ain’t so Joe!

“Snail Hunting”

snails-003Sometimes being a dad requires a multitude of skills, abilities and modalities.  Tonight those skills needed to include”snail hunting” to be a complete dad.  Tori, my three-year old told me tonight was perfect for finding or hunting snails.  Indeed it has been raining for a few days in our dry climate of West Texas and with the rain come, at least at our house, the snails.

Now I was busy getting ready for a trip to Bryan, Texas tomorrow, but the allure of a three year-old with love in her eyes is too much for this daddy.  I succumbed to her charm and headed out the front door to find snails.  And I am so glad I did.

The most cherished moments in life come not from not from the scripted, expensive and complicated plans we adults foist upon ourselves, but from the moments when we are just who we are: moms, dads, husbands, wives, sons, daughters, friends, neighbors or whatever title you have in you life.

These pictures do indeed tell a story of a thousand words.  Take a moment tonight or whenever you get the oppourtunity and go “snail hunting” you won’t regret it! Thanks Tori and I love you too!

Public Enemies Review

peYesterday my wife and I saw the movie, Public Enemies, starrring Johnny Depp and Christian Bale.  I was eager to see a movie about John Dillinger the 1930′s Public Enemy number one.  I loved Christian Bale in the Batman movie and have come to appreciate Johnny Depp, but . . . I was dissapointed with this one.  I came into the movie wanting to love it, but came away saying less than glowing things about the movie.

I asked my wife on the way out what she thought and she succinctly summed up my feelings, “It was OK” and that is the best I can say of it.  The action was slow, the movie too long (143 minutes), and the story barely followed the timeline of the last few years on Dillinger’s life.  There were huge gaps in the last year of Dillinger’s life (check this link for an accurate timeline of John Dillinger’s life), some of would have been very interesting.

Christian Bale played Marvin Pervis, the FBI agent who was credited with tracking down several public enemy number ones, but his accent was barely believeable.  He played it like he did Batman.  Depp was good, as usual, but seemed to be too reserved for the real John Dillinger.  The movie spent a great deal of time on the love affair Dillinger had with his girlfriend, but the real Dillinger had several girlfriends and was in the company of a prosititute the night he was gunned down in Chicago.

Maybe I expect to much historical accuracy, but nonetheless I was disappointed with the movie.  I wish I would have waited for the movie on DVD, at least then I could have fast forward and made the movie shorter.

Leave your opinion if you see it, I would love to hear what you think.

Movie Day

PUBLIC ENEMIES

We are heading out to see the new Johnny Depp movie, Public Enemies. The trailer looks good, will give you the critique when we return. Today is the perfect day for a movie during the summer. It is raining, overcast and dreary, so instead of golf we are heading indoors.

Watson’s Effort Took Me Back

If you are a golfer and are older than 40 you just had to love the British Open golf tournament at Turnberry. Seeing Tom Watson in the hunt on Sunday reminded me of watching golf with my dad who died four years ago. It was a marvelous time machine that had me on the couch for the entire last round.

Watson tormented me with a bogey on the first hole, I thought the story was over, old guy gave it a run but didn’t have it for a real win. But over the course of the next few hours Watson not only held his own, but was poised to win. His eight iron on the 18th hole was one club too many. Too bad, the story would have been incredible, 59 year-old beats incredible odds to win the Open. But it was not meant to be, three putts, a playoff and a drubbing in the playoff.

But as much as I was rooting for Tom Watson to win, the day did not take from me what he gave: a walk down memory lane with my dad at my side. Thanks for that Tom!

Vacations are Great!

Freese Cousins at Phoenix Zoo July 2009

Freese Cousins at Phoenix Zoo July 2009

Just got back from vacation in Phoenix with family last weekend.  We had such a great time, we were busy, but not too busy.  We got to see everyone and everyone got to see us, it was wonderful!  We really enjoyed ourselves.  The weather was so hot, but we didn’t seem to mind too much, my only complaint was I didn’t get to do any golfing, maybe next time. In the meantime check out some of our photos by clicking here.

We left on July 5th had a great time in Tucson with my sister and then headed up to Phoenix for the week, and boy did I mention it was hot?  Around 112 degrees everyday.  I used to live there, but not sure how I did it.  The traffic is awful too, but it is such a beautiful place to live, in DECEMBER.

We celebrated my my son’s 17th birthday and my daughter’s 16th with friends and family.  I think it is great the kids want to do that for their birthdays.   It has been a tradition for years in our family to have, as we say in Texas: big doings.  Some years we visited a resort with a waterpark, other years we did just did parties and/or dinners, but always with family.

Tradition is important, it builds into the fabric of family something to be counted on, looked forward to and experienced with joy.  The beauty of our hot vacations are, they become more than vacations and in fact, almost become more important the event itself.  Take time to do vacations or should I say, create and live a tradition.  We do and even though it happens in a rather hot and crowded environment, who cares, we are with people we love and on that is which we most enjoy. Check out some of our photos here.
