Interested in a Book Club?

I love to read, do you? If so maybe we can start a book club this summer. I think a great place to start would be with how our churches are doing in God’s eyes, a big topic to be sure. Here is a book I would like to begin with: Leaving Ruin. Click the link to order your copy.

Here are what others are saying about this book:

Berryman has taken an evangelical preacher and turned him into the most unexpected thing: a human being. A remarkable novel. –Annie Dillard, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Pilgrim at Tinker Creek
Embraces the life of the religious and lets its sing with humor, pathos and, ultimately, true significance. –Albert Haley, author of Exotic: A Novel (winner of the John Irving First Novel Prize)

If you are interested leave a comment and/or email me at Todd.  This is NOT a Bible study, but a book club.  Men and women are welcome.  Let me know what you think.  I think it would be cool to meet at church or even Starbucks!

Chimpanzee, Tori and Me

I took my little girl to see this Tim Allen narrated movie. Tori and I had fun, but the movie was, long, even though it was short. Check out the trailer.

Umpire Bob Davidson Gets Suspended

I spend ten years in Minor League baseball with a “cup of coffee” in the big leagues, and I can tell you umpiring is tough. Not only that, Charlie Manuel is no peach of a guy. I’m not sure if Bob should have gotten suspended, but I know Charlie should have. A cheap thing to do is when you beak a guy with your cap. But Bob gets a day off, not a bad thing all-in-all.

Umpire Gets Hit and “Beered”

I am all for passion, but you cannot throw a helmet at a umpire, Lawrie will and should be suspended for a while.

Football and Theology

Yesterday a local church brought Tim Tebow to our local town to sit and visit.  I am a huge Denver Bronco fan and of course was rooting for Tim Tebow.  I love his Christian witness and how he is so vocal about his faith.  So I was so looking forward to his visit.  The venue was, of course, a football field with a couple of music acts before and then Switchfoot to play after Tebow.  It promised to be a great evening . . .

However, it was less than I thought it would be.  The questions seemed hurried, no time for follow up.  No tough questions, no questions that delved into the recent treatment of Tim Tebow by the Denver Broncos.  And most disappointing, Mr. Tebow didn’t sign any autographs, except for those with few who were lucky enough to have connections to the church that brought him to Midland.

Bottom line: I was left wanting and my opinion of Mr. Tebow, well lets just say, it is changed.  If you went what did you think?

Gun at Church?

Last Sunday a Midland, Texas church (my hometown) had an incident involving a “gun”.  I learned of this yesterday in my classroom (I teach 7th and 8th grade).  One of my students told me the story in first person.  Seems her dad and mom are pastors at the church and she had an unique insight into the event.  I thought she was exaggerating, that is until I got home and read this article.

Now as a youth pastor myself I must admit I can see this happening at our church.  I have had students bring their paintball guns to church.  Heck, last week I brought my rifle in to let one of our men take it home and repair it for me.  I hate to think what would have happened had we walked out of the building with the rifle in our hands with the police outside.

Here is the scenario: a young man brought his paintball gun to church to show the other students.  A neighbor sees this and thinks there is a man walking into the church to do harm.  At this point I’m not sure whether to laugh or be thankful.  It gets better, the police roped off the area and evacuate residents.  All the while the kids are inside playing a game and doing what you do at church youth group.  I can’t but think of this scene at my own church.  Imagine coming out of the building after your group, oblivious to all that was going around on the outside and being told, “Stop, Police get on the ground now”.

I can’t help but wonder if we as a society have become so eager to look for danger and fear, that we have lost our balance?  What do you think?  Leave a comment.

Sunday Morning Comin’ Down

Missy Sleeps

That is the title of the old Johnny Cash song,Sunday Morning Comin’ Down, I love that song.  It reminds me of my youth when my dad would sing along when it played on the radio.  I miss those days with my dad, him and I on a Sunday playing golf, going for a drive or maybe visiting some relatives.  How do you spend Sunday?  The picture you see above is how my lovely wife decided to spend her Sunday afternoon.  A little nap after lunch isn’t such a bad idea.

I on the other hand chose to watch a great movie, Legends of the Fall.  It is a story of manhood, fatherhood and purpose, all rolled into one.  Set in Montana, the cinematography is incredible, reminds me of the year I spent in the Big Sky state.  The movie stars Brad Pitt and Anthony Hopkins, both are superb.  Some of it is hard to watch as the movie is filled with incredible tragedy.  We watched it as homework for our men’s group that meets each week, it makes one think of their own lives and how they interacted with their dads.  Anyway, I recommend it, but don’t watch it with the young ones.

However you spend your Sundays I hope you are able to relax and recharge, Jesus said the Sabbath was made for man, use it wisely  Happy Sunday.

Act of Valor

I took my boys to see Act of Valor last night. We really enjoyed it. The movie is shot using an inexpensive camera which makes it interesting, but even more interesting is the fact that they used Navy Seals, the real thing. Continue Reading…
