A New Year
Well the first day came and went with little fanfare, rather smooth I think. We do have 17 new teachers on a campus of around 45 faculty. That is quite a high percentage of turnover. Which got me thinking the obvious question: why?
Why is it that so many of our teachers move on? I am not sure I know the answer to that question. I think we have a job that is tough and not easy to do well. Plus, we do also have a booming economy which helps many of our staff leave for greener pastures. However, many come back, and soon. I know of three teachers who have left in the last two years and have come back this year and before. Hmm . . . must be something about affecting the future.
And that is why we teach, to affect the future directly through our students. I pray I do not forget that for one day this year. After all, why else would I do this job? It ain’t for the money!
A Prayer for Teachers:
To face its struggles and its strife
And to improve their worth.
Not just the lesson in a book,
Or how the rivers flow,
But to choose the proper path,
Wherever they may go.
To understand eternal truth,
And know right from wrong,
And gather all the beauty of
A flower and a song,
For if I help the world to grow
In wisdom and grace,
Then I feel that I have won
And I have filled my place.
And so I ask your guidance, God
That I may do my part,
For character and confidence
And happiness of heart.
A prayer from James J. Metcalf
Have a great year!
