My title sounds great, but I don’t believe it. But if you talk to our school administrators and politicians they think today is the most important day of your student’s life. Why? Because today we take some STAAR tests at my school beginning today. Four hours where you are to prove your worth as a student and human being in some people’s mind. But is this really true?
NO! The multiple choice test is a poor measure of learning to begin with and to pack it all in one day further erodes the felicity of the test. But we keep using them, why? Because it is easy and gives us a quick number and our education leaders are at a loss on how to measure success in education. I don’t blame them. After eight years in public education I too am at a loss, but for different reasons.
We are testing for the wrong thing in the way at the wrong time. Too many tests that dictate funding and in many cases, job security, cause those teaching your children to teach to the test. Which means your children aren’t being taught how to solve problems and be creative, they are being taught on how to REMEMBER facts to pass a test.
Don’t believe me? Go to any faculty meeting before STAAR and see the fear and anxiety in the eyes of all present. That number we get on how many passed the STAAR tells us how good we are. Really?
Come on, we have to better than that. How? Great question, read the next blog for some ideas. Until next time, peace.
