Today’s Readings
Genesis 30:1-31:16 Matthew 10:1-23 Psalm 12:1-8 Proverbs 3:13-15
There are so many interesting stories in today’s readings. Jacob has many children with his wives and their maidservants. Having children with maidservants is an interesting topic, but we will not explore it here. However, I would be safe to say that should Mrs. Freese have a maidservant there would be no chance I would be having any children with that maidservant.
In the Gospel story, Jesus sends out his twelve disciples and tells them something most Christians don’t talk about: “shaking the dust from your feet.” Meaning that if you share the Gospel with someone they may not be ready to hear it or perhaps we are not meant to be best friends with everyone we meet. But that topic might be tackled in another blog post.
I want to talk about our wisdom lesson today from Proverbs 3. In fact, the lesson is about wisdom itself.
13 Blessed are those who find wisdom, those who gain understanding, 14 for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold. 15 She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her.
Proverbs 3:13-15
The verse talks about being blessed if you find wisdom. But what is wisdom? Here is the definition:
the quality or state of being wise; knowledge of what is true or right coupled with just judgment as to action; sagacity, discernment, or insight.

The Bible has a whole genre of wisdom, so God must think it is pretty important. This definition sheds some light on why it is so important. Wisdom and knowledge are not the same things. I think of wisdom as knowing something and then acting on that knowledge in a wise or discerning way.
Or better said is having the ability to judge situations, people, events and opportunities in a way that benefits all involved. Wisdom cannot be learned in a classroom, or at least all wisdom. Wisdom comes from making mistakes and feeling the pain of the consequences of those mistakes. That is why many older people are wise, but not all.
God wants the best for us and for us to in his plan, Jeremiah 29:11, but we must KNOW the plan and then being able to be able to ACT on that plan, that is WISDOM!
